While Hubs was out Saturday evening, I watched a movie called End of the Spear. In my ‘approaching middle aged‘ state, I can no longer watch things that are completely dark and disturbing (as if that was ever really a good idea, but, hey, I was young and hip and trying to figure this whole gig out). Anyhoo, this quest for not completely morally bereft films, led me to End of the Spear last night. And I think I really liked it. It is based on a true story of 5 Christian missionaries in Ecuador who wanted to make contact with the Waodani tribe, a violent people whose lives are dominated by revenge killings. The story that unfolds after they do make contact completely changes both groups of people forever.
There was an earlier documentary released about this story called ‘Beyond the Gates of Splendor,’ which I think I will watch next. I liked that this movie didn’t try too hard to tie everything up neatly in a nice little box, yet there is still redemption and transformation in the plot. You can see moments in the film that are ‘only God.’
While on my quest, I have watched several films that are not completely morally bereft, but, how shall we say, not entirely artistically satisfying. I thought this movie did a good job of being both.
Got any other movie recommendations for me?
Have you seen Miss Potter? It was adorable!
I loved The End of the Spear/Gates of Splendor movie experience. And I second the recommendation of Miss Potter. Also, we watched Amazing Grace recently and my husband said it was good (I fell asleep of course because, these days, if the lights go out, I’m out. Happy movie watching.
Super flick.
I have been borrowing the Love Comes Softly videos from the library. I am a big historical fiction fan so they are of interest to me.
I loved Amazing Grace too.
Must see Miss Potter.
Hmm. I haven’t read those Janette Oke books, but the videos look intriguing. I’m secretly dying to watch Little House on the Prairie with my dd, but so far she’s not shown interest.
I’ve seen Amazing Grace and Miss Potter. Didn’t hate ‘em.
This one looks really interesting, I’ll have to check it out!
We just watched ‘Enchanted’… it was dorky, but cute.
One of my favorites that is a bit of a sad story is ‘Life is Beautiful’ and I prefer the version with subtitles.
I also love a lot of old movies… one of my all time favorites is ‘The Grass Is Greener’ with Carey Grant and Debra Kerr. I think you would get a kick out of the wry wit of this one
Loved this movie as well.
Check out the Heartland Film Festival and their past winners. They also have a top 100 films list that has lots of great suggestions.
Enjoying your blog- you make me laugh:)
[...] 4, 2008 by bloginmyeye Since I had such a suprisingly good movie-watching experience with End of the Spear, I decided ‘missionary movies’ (of course!) must be the way to go. I picked up another [...]
End of the Spear is one of my favorite movies. Just had to tell you.
Recommendations? I liked Second Chance. The screenplay was great. The acting was not good. Sorry MWSmith. The moviemaking wasn’t great. BUT the screenplay was very good.
I agree with the whole artistic Christian void.
Of course, I loved The Passion of Christ. Very hard to watch. But so good.
I hope you post again soon. I miss your wit, friend!!!
